Flames began quickly spreading on the second floor of a vacant 2½-story building on Lafayette Street just off Rosa Parks Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, responders said.
It quickly extended to the third floor and forced firefighters into an exterior attic while threatening a twin home next door.
Fire officials asked NJ TRANSIT to temporarily close the elevated railway above Lafayette Street.
Firefighters doused hot spots past midnight.
No one was found inside and no injuries were immediately reported. Authorities were trying to determine the cause.
The two-alarmer followed another blaze a couple of hours earlier on Getty Avenue at Robert Street.
Lafayette Street runs only a half-dozen blocks. Yet it has had nearly as many fires over just the past few years.
Mutual aid included firefighters from Fair Lawn, Hackensack, Haledon, Hawthorne, Little Falls, Prospect Park, Saddle Brook, Totowa and West Paterson. Members of the Passaic County Emergency Services ReHab Canteen also responded.
